As far as cnc goes it startes back at manual machining. Running vertical mills, lathes, this is one of the first classes she will have to take at most technical schools is like a shop practices class. Being good at numbers is a plus because eberthing in the machining world revolves around geometry and stuff like this. As far as finding a job their are always openings for experienced machinist manual or cnc. For a woman most machine shops wont ask for anyone to lift over 50 pounds in alot of cases but this changes from place to place if you work at a shipping yard she would be expected to lift alot more i would think just for example. But if she gets the education in the cnc filled she could go on into cnc programming. But i worked at a machine shop for the past 5 years and there were several women that we better cnc machinist just for the fact they pay alot more attention and ask more questions. The working enviroment isn't the most cleanest at least thats what my experience has shown me. But there are those plant were you will find people running cnc machines one part at a time just taking a part out and pushing a button. A monkey with a banana could do that. but if she gets the education or some form of training this would put her well above the curve. As far as studying it in college it has it moments. She will have to learn many different things from leraning to read mechanical drawing to tolerances and gdnt to learning how to read mics and calipers and more advanced equipment used to measure a part. then there is learning all about the cnc machines them selfs and learning how oto do an old form of programming call m.d.i. manual data imput. then there is learning the most advanced forms using software such as mastercam or featurecam were you learn to draw the part up and stuff and it produces the code the mahince will read to make the part. But overall i studied it as a mechanical eng. with a manufac. consentraction and i enjoyed the heck out of but it is more of a mans world in the machining but i have meet women that could out machine me anyday of the week. hopes this helps tell her to setup an appointment at the local college and they will give her a good insight. I was told that if i got my associate the company that hired me would most likly send you back to get your bach. worked so far. there is another world to this thing though and that is quality that is the best place to be in my opinon most quality is in a controled envirorment in a clean room just measuring parts a much easier path and no matter were you go or what they make they have to have some form of quality. hopes this helps some. good luck to her
